Our Journey
From a small group of hiking enthusiasts to Ghana's most vibrant outdoor community
Our History
The story of how Tsenku Hiking Club grew from a personal passion to a thriving community
The attraction to live at Obosomase was inspired by the lush green surroundings still covered in virgin forest. In 1996, when I acquired my first plot of land, my family and friends labelled me as "troubled" for wanting to build a dwelling house in the middle of the forest. Having grown up at No.2 Forest Site Achimota where my hideout was the Achimota Forest in the early sixties, it is no wonder that the attraction to the Akwapim Forests was a natural progression.
As constructing the residence was slow and painfully expensive for a young man, an easy escape into the forest was very interesting. It was a delight to get lost and an adventure to find my way back.
Eventually I gathered a team of younger men - Joe, Simon, and Richard - and we decided on 6th March, 2011 (a public holiday) to go foraging into the forest to a point where we had breathtaking views. This was the birth of Tsenku Hiking Club as it became a weekly affair to invite those who dared to come along to adventure with us into the forest.
The name TSENKU (also spelt KYENKU) takes its origins from the Tsenku waterfalls in Dodowa, which was the ultimate destination for relaxation under a waterfall almost always quiet, serene and a perfect get away. The challenge was to find our way back through fauna foliage and canopy to "base camp." Many a person took the wrong turning, along a pathway only for us to spend 2-3 extra hours looking for the lost ones.
Growing Together
With time, the club had a steady stream of participants and we can easily boast of hundreds of adventures that have gone hiking with us. Many hiking routes have now been forged, making each hike a unique and different adventure.
Our Adventures in Ghana:
- • Kyabobo National Park, Oti Region
- • Shai Hills Resource Reserve
- • Krobo Mountains
- • Wli Waterfalls
- • Mount Afadjato (walking into and out of Togo)
- • Amedzofe and many more
International Expeditions:
Our travels have taken us outside Ghana to Sao Tome to hike in true lush evergreen virgin forest. Many of our members have also conquered Mount Kilimanjaro (Africa's highest peak), the Atlas Mountains in Morocco, and Mount Fuji in Japan.
The Madness Walk
Our craziest and most impactful adventure - walking 54 kilometers through the night for charity
Starting from Dansoman Last Stop to Obosomase, this annual overnight walk challenges our limits while raising funds to improve educational standards in public schools within our hiking environments, particularly through ICT equipment donations.
